In the Aegean Sea with a film crew of French Television, we explain and document in real time the problems of the fisheries sector.
Our focus is the devastating effects of uncontrolled trawling – a fishing practice that has contributed greatly to overfishing and the emptying of seas across the Mediterranean.
Greece, through the government’s announcements, has convinced the European public that it is taking a leading role in the EU in fisheries management through trawling bans and the establishment of 2 new Marine Protected Areas. However, this has nothing to do with reality, nor our actual needs for effective and immediate conservation.
In a country where we are destroying ecosystems on a daily basis with projects that continue to be “fast tracked” and have a devastating environmental footprint, measures to protect our seas cannot continue to be bureaucratic and based on embellished proclamations. We must make this known to every European citizen, via all international media.
In this critical period, all decisions taken to protect the environment must be not only applicable in real time, but also fully effective.
