Advice For Consumption
Think before consuming this fish and always respect sustainable sizes and seasons.Eat responsibly. Due to ineffective legislation that does not take into account the species biology, the legal size of this fish is substantially lower than the sustainable size. This makes it particularly important to respect the sustainable size shown.
Toxicity
No toxicity has been recorded
Description
Protractile premaxilla; head length equals and longer than body depth; lateral line scales 75 or more; a black or blue spot on the body side above the pectoral fin, dorsal and anal fin. More elongated body with grey-blluish or brownish dorsal coloration and gray above and silvery below. The color varies with age, sex and season. Looks like: Spicara maena (Blotched Picarel): has a taller, less elongated body compared to S. smaris. The back is typically bluish-gray or greenish, and the black spot on the side, while present, is not as prominent as the one on S. smaris.
