Risso’s dolphins – one of the least studied and relatively unknown species of dolphins found in the Greek seas.
It is the largest dolphin species found here and the only species that exhibits migratory behaviour – they are normally found in small pods, migrating over deep waters, often with steep canyons or trenches.
Young Risso’s dolphins are dark in colour and as they grow older they become lighter due to the many characteristic scars on their bodies caused by interactions either with other dolphins or with their prey.
Archipelagos’ first recording of Risso’s dolphins in the region was in the autumn of 2000, and with our continued presence at sea throughout the year we have been monitoring their populations since.
Unless we fill the important knowledge gaps that exist about the life of our seas, it will be impossible to protect it!
