A Unique Resident of the Aegean Sea!

One of the most important, yet lesser-known marine mammal species studied for years by the research team of the Archipelagos Institute is the Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus).

They live in small groups and migrate over deep-sea trenches and underwater canyons. The first recorded observation of its migration in the northeastern Aegean took place in the autumn of 2000, and research has continued systematically ever since, in an effort to fill the many knowledge gaps surrounding this unique marine mammal.

If you’re traveling through the Greek seas and come across rare species (dolphins, whales, seals, or other interesting marine life etc.), feel free to send us photos, videos, or observations at: observations@archipelago.gr
