Protecting Spawning Fish: A Shared Responsibility for Healthy Seas

Reproductive herds of fish – their protection is our responsibility!
In recent weeks we have been recording more and more frequently reproductive herds of fish on coastal areas of the Aegean — magnificent images that however remind us of our joint responsibility. It goes without saying: every time we remove a breeding fish from the sea, we also deprive ourselves of the survival of hundreds of thousands of eggs that will never become fish.

While fish gather in the shallows to breed, professional and amateur fishermen fish intensively, decimating the herds. This is due to the absence of self-evident protective measures during the reproductive season — measures that fishermen themselves have consistently requested for decades.

As the margins for our seas narrow, each of us can make a difference. If you consume fish, do it right: DO NOT buy fish during their breeding season. No demand, there’s no motive for this absurd catch.

Spawning Fish Schools – protecting them is a responsibility we all share
In recent weeks, we have been monitoring more and more spawning schools of fish in coastal areas of the Aegean, these breathtaking sights remind us all of our shared responsibility.

It is obvious that every time we remove a fish from the sea during its spawning period, we also remove the chance for hundreds of thousands of eggs to survive and grow into new fish. Whilst they gather in shallow waters to spawn, professional and recreational fishers continue intensive exploitation, decimating these schools.

This happens due to a lack of basic protective measures during the spawning season, which fishers themselves, have been steadily calling for, over the past few decades.

Our seas cannot afford any more wasted time and each of us can make a difference. So, If you consume fish, do it responsibly: DO NOT buy fish during their spawning season. Without the demand, there is no unsustainable supply
