Fish4Life
Choose seafood responsibly - help protect our seas!
Overview
Fish4Life is a guide to sustainable fish consumption in Greece and across the Mediterranean. It aims to provide the public with clear, accessible information on which seafood is sustainable to consume and when. The platform offers detailed information on the status of each species (e.g. whether it is illegal or sustainable to consume), as well as its breeding season, during which consumption should be avoided.
It also provides guidance on the minimum legal size in Greece—the size below which it is illegal to catch or consume a species—as well as the minimum sustainable size, which reflects the recommended size for consumption based on reproductive maturity, allowing species to regenerate. In Greece, in many cases this can differ greatly from the legal limit.
Everyone can help combat overfishing by making responsible and health-conscious seafood choices. To protect future fish stocks, it is important to avoid consuming rapidly declining species and those caught using harmful or illegal methods such as spearfishing, drift nets, dynamite fishing, and other destructive practices. Instead, consumers are encouraged to choose seafood caught using more sustainable methods, such as traps or pole fishing.
Unfortunately, several species that are illegal to catch or consume can still be found on the Greek market and restaurants. Fish4Life helps you avoid these species and encourages you to report them when encountered.

Think before you eat – This species faces increasing pressures and should only be consumed responsibly
Fishstocks – Declining due to overexploitation
Do not consume
Absolutely avoid purchasing or consuming these species
