Sailors, divers, fishermen, ocean enthusiasts, and tourists united in contributing to ocean conservation.

The Project

Eco-Navigation is a citizen-science platform initiated by Archipelagos. As a citizen scientist you can help us save the sea reporting your observations. By gathering simple information during your time at sea you can strengthen our effort for conservation. If you are a sea-enthusiast we need your help to protect our ocean and the marine species.

Mission

Our mission is to protect and defend the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea and in particular the Aegean Sea. You can help us in this mission, all you have to do is read the information below and report your sightings of marine life to us!

Enjoy Our Seas With Respect

DO

DON’T

Observe Marine Mammals from a Safe Distance

  • If you spot a marine mammal or sea turtle, keep a respectful distance to avoid causing disturbance

Report Your Sightings to our Eco-Navigation Platform

  • Join our citizen-science community and support the research and conservation work of Archipelagos

Keep Seas and Coasts Clean

  • Don’t leave litter at the beach and pick up trash you might find in the sea or on the coast

Eat Fish Sustainably

  • Support artisanal fisheries and local fishermen and choose seasonal fish

Approach or Enter Sea Caves

  • Mediterranean monk seals live in caves and human presence causes them disturbance, making them abandon these safe shelters

Collect Marine Organisms as Souvenirs

  • Removing shells, sea stars and other marine organisms from the seabed or the beach damages ecosystems and endangers other organisms that rely on them for survival

Feed or harass marine animals

  • To survive in a world full of human threats, they need minimal close contact with us

Anchor Your Boat in Posidonia Seagrass Meadows

  • Each anchor scar takes several decades to recover

Spear Gun Fishing at Night or While Scuba Diving is Illegal

  • Speargun fishing is illegal at night and while scuba diving, and any observed instances should be reported

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't know what species it is?

Check out the animal cards further up on the website. If you still do not know, report it anyway with as much information as you have.

Yes! As long as you know when and where you spotted the species, you can still report a sighting.

The information enters our database. When reports are verified, this information is used towards future research.

Overview

Eco-Navigation is a citizen-science platform initiated by Archipelagos. As a citizen scientist you can help us save the sea reporting your observations. By gathering simple information during your time at sea you can strengthen our effort for conservation.  If you are a sea-enthusiast we need your help to protect our ocean and the marine species.

Eco-Navigation provides a system for anyone to report sightings of pollution or marine life such as dolphins, whales, seals, turtles, invasive species, jellyfish blooms, and any other unusual marine organisms, with submitted photographs being encouraged. These contributions of citizen science are important data for combating rising climate and human threats to the Mediterranean.

Our mission is to protect and defend the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea and in particular the Aegean Sea.  You can help us in this mission, all you have to do is read the information below and report your sightings of marine life to us!

How Will Archipelagos Use The Information I Send?

The data you send will be stored in Archipelagos database and used to analyse different variables such as the location, the species abundance and, when possible, identify the individual. All the information shared with us will strengthen our conservation effort to protect our sea. Understanding our marine environment and the marine species is essential to successfully protect the habitat.
