Photo-identification of Bottlenose dolphins

Archipelagos’ marine mammal researchers, who are sea all year round, collect, among other data, hundreds of photographs of the dolphin and whale species monitored in the region, with the aim of identifying individuals based on their markings.

These markings are caused by interactions with members of the same species, as well as other species, and can also be caused by anthropogenic factors.

A dolphin’s dorsal fin is akin to a human fingerprint, meaning each individual’s dorsal fin is distinct, and as a result we can create catalogs of individuals that are identified in our study areas. Over time this allows us to gather data on an individual’s behavior pattern and understand the social structure of larger groups.

Photo ID provides a non-invasive technique of tracking individuals over time allowing us to learn about distribution, movement patterns, home range, and species interactions without potentially influencing their behavior through the use of tracking devices.
