The goal of our research at Archipelagos’ microplastic laboratory is to identify the primary sources of plastic pollution and to quantify the extent of the contamination. Our researchers conduct thorough analyses to assess the abundance of microplastic fibers and fragments in various species and habitats in the Greek seas.

Sample species are collected from all food chain levels and they include fish and marine invertebrates (e.g. sea urchins), both native and invasive, as well as seabirds, marine mammals and turtles which had been found stranded dead on the shores. The concentration of microplastics in marine sediments and sea water is also being analyzed.

Our understanding of how microplastic affects the health of marine organisms but also the public health is only just beginning. As another round of research as well as scientific publications is soon to be completed, we will be sharing with you soon the alarming results that concern us all.
