The Archipelagos Institute is currently participating in a working meeting in Barcelona of the international network of environmental organizations Med Sea Alliance.
With the participation of 16 environmental organisations from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco, Belgium and the United Kingdom, as well as 2 international organisations, the meeting focuses on the development of a common strategy to address illegal and destructive fishing in the Mediterranean.
The Archipelagos Institute has been actively contributing to the network’s work since its establishment in 2020, playing a key role in the systematic documentation – through scientific research in the open sea – of the real extent of destructive fishing in Greek waters and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The organisations that make up the Med Sea Alliance share the belief that only through coordinated, Mediterranean-wide action can the threats facing our seas be effectively addressed – and not through isolated interventions at a national level.
To achieve meaningful protection of marine biodiversity, fish stocks, and coastal communities, it is crucial to treat the Mediterranean as a single, interconnected sea, as it truly is – and not in fragmented terms based on geopolitical divisions.
