As part of the JJBA Bioacoustics Conference, held in Besançon, France, Archipelagos researchers Elisa Lamberti and Margherita Medina presented the latest findings from our research on the communication sounds of striped dolphins and short-beaked common dolphins in the eastern Aegean Sea.

Bioacoustics is an invaluable, non-invasive research tool for understanding the communication, social organization, and behavioural complexity of marine mammals. Through the analysis of their sounds, we are working to unravel patterns of habitat use, social structure, and behavioural interactions within dolphin populations in the Aegean Sea.

By addressing significant knowledge gaps in dolphin bioacoustics and behavioural ecology, this research contributes to a better understanding of these populations and to the development of effective conservation measures, aiming to contribute to their protection against increasingly growing anthropogenic threats.
