Marine Education in Focus: Archipelagos Joins Dialogue at the Sorbonne

The Archipelagos Institute recently participated in a working meeting at the Sorbonne University in Paris, centred on the theme of “Marine Education.” This Franco-Hellenic gathering brought together academics, researchers, policymakers in the education sector, and educators from both countries. The goal was to explore effective ways to bridge the significant educational gap present in both the French and Greek education systems, concerning marine life, ocean conservation, and related topics, at both university and school levels.

For the Archipelagos Institute and its educational arm, the “International School of the Sea,” this invitation to contribute to such an important dialogue marks a meaningful recognition of the work it has carried out over the past 25 years. With a long-standing commitment to applied marine education in the Aegean, the Institute has trained the next generation of scientists from over 40 countries, year-round and in real-life conditions of marine research and conservation.

Nothing can truly change unless we adequately prepare a new generation of scientists — equipped not only with knowledge and skills, but also with inspiration and a strong sense of purpose. They are the ones who must take on the difficult task of meeting the increasingly complex demands of marine conservation and addressing the immense environmental challenges that our generations have created — and continue to create.
