In the Greek seas we are lucky enough to record unique biodiversity and among many others, 9 species of marine mammals and more than 34 species of sharks.
With so many reports in social networks and the media in recent days about the presence of the apparently harmless blue shark in shallow waters, it highlights once again our vast ignorance about biodiversity – that is, about the thousands of species with which we coexist and interact on a daily basis – especially outside the cities.
The panic and insecurity expressed by citizens and magnified by the media, regarding “dangerous” or “man-eating” snakes, spiders, sharks, jellyfish or even sea anemones etc. is a result of this huge gap in knowledge and understanding.
We therefore remain vulnerable to all these species around us, but they are also endangered by humans, as we do not understand how we can co-exist.
