Advice For Consumption
Consumption of this species is considered unsustainable. Think before consuming this species, and always respect sustainable sizes and breeding seasons. Capture and sale of egg bearing lobsters is prohibited throughout the year. The fishing, trading and sale of berried individuals of the species is prohibited; if such individuals are caught, their immediate release into the sea is required, even when there is no time ban.
Toxicity
Non toxic and no heavy metal accumulation.
Description
It is blue-coloured above with coalescing spots and yellowish below. The first pair of walking legs carry massive (but slightly unequal) pincers which can be formidable and dangerous. The body lacks strong spines or ridges and is only slightly granular. Other identity keys include: Large eyes, same width as eye stalks; pine-like antennal scale; Rostrum rather short and spiny; Strong gastro-orbital groove with, below it, the cervical groove; Chelae large. Looks like: Homarus americanus (American lobster), has spines on the underside of its rostrum (a projection of the head) and red or red-tipped spines on its claws, while the European lobster lacks these spines on the rostrum and has white or white-tipped claw spines.
IUCN info
