Internships with the
Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary

Archipelagos internships with the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary (AMLS) provide an opportunity for people of various disciplines ranging from veterinary science and animal welfare to communications, to join and contribute to this innovative endeavor. Internships run year-round and are dedicated to the progress and management of the AMLS facility, under development on Lipsi Island, Greece. The AMLS will support the first of its kind veterinary clinic and rehabilitation center for marine animals such as dolphins, seals and turtles. In the next phase of development it will also be able to host formerly captive dolphins, contributing to an end to the critical problem of dolphin abuse in captivity. This team is dedicated to combining innovation with high standards of animal welfare, aimed to provide a cost-effective, sustainable solution to a global problem.

Key Projects

Assisting in the development/ testing of operation protocols and related installations, as well as conducting research on related veterinary practices. These projects help ensure the implementation of the highest standards of animal welfare.

Assisting with fundraising efforts, grant applications and other communications in order to support further development of the facility.

Participate in coastal habitat restoration and research in the AMLS bay. This includes underwater replanting of seagrass meadows, camera-based monitoring of coastal ecosystems, design and installation of artificial reefs, monitoring blue carbon of Posidonia seagrass and more.

Background

The Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary (AMLS), when fully operational, aims to provide critical clinical care and rehabilitative treatment to marine animals in a “teaching marine mammal hospital” far from human disturbance. The sanctuary will also offer long-term care and refuge for dolphins displaced due to closure of marine parks providing expert care, comfort and compassion for animals’ physical and mental needs while setting exemplary standards for the future of animal welfare. The AMLS is housed in a model-green building, powered by solar energy, while the water supply comes from a low-energy-demand desalination unit, combined with rain water collection. In preparation of the operation within the bay, the team applies multiple innovative habitat enhancement techniques such as experimental artificial reefs and replantation of seagrass meadows.

Your Role

AMLS interns can join from broad backgrounds including marine and veterinary sciences, engineering, project management, fundraising education, media and communications or other related fields. Depending on your background, you will be providing support to different aspects of the AMLS which include assisting in development and testing of protocols and operational processes, work in the sanctuary bay with the implementation of artificial reefs, seagrass replanting and fish biodiversity assessments, or work for communications, networking and fundraising. You will be offered the ability to work in a general intern role collaborating on different projects topics, or in a specialized intern role contributing to one pre-defined project.
