Terrestrial Research & Conservation
Overview
The research and conservation of terrestrial habitats has become an increasingly important part of action at the Archipelagos Institute. Although we are a marine-focused organisation, we cannot ignore the terrestrial biodiversity of the islands and islets in the Aegean Sea. The islands of the Aegean host some of the most pristine and extensive insular terrestrial habitats in the Mediterranean. The heterogeneity of the landscape combined with the mild climate and proximity to the Anatolian mainland has led to high levels of biodiversity and endemism. Despite this, many populations remain largely understudied.
The island of Samos is a key biodiversity hotspot, supporting one of the most diverse herpetofauna in the Aegean. This includes the last remaining population of Mediterranean chameleons in Greece, one of the few insular populations of golden jackals in Europe, and freshwater species such as the Balkan pond terrapin and the critically-endangered European eel. The island also acts as a key stopover for over 200 migratory bird species, constituting up to half of all bird species found in Greece. The rich biodiversity of the island hosts over 1,500 plant species that are under constant threat from wildfires, logging, and herbicides.
Though many of these species are protected at national and European levels, management, and conservation in practice remain ineffective. Archipelagos works year-round to protect the ecosystems found on Samos while sharing our knowledge to raise awareness among the general public, and collaborating with the local communities.

Archipelagos Institute extends conservation efforts to the protection of island fauna and flora through the use of combined multidisciplinary scientific research. This work values the unique biodiversity found amongst the terrestrial ecosystems of the eastern Aegean.
Research & Conservation
Understanding the distribution, characteristics and trends of Golden Jackal populations is a prerequisite for the development of effective protection mechanisms. Although several studies on the social behavior and hierarchy of these groups have been conducted in other parts of the world, little is known about the jackals living on Samos.
Camera traps are used to determine the number of animals within a group, identify individual group members and analyze social relationships and hierarchies between members. Additionally, the use of bioacoustic devices allows for assessment of vocalisation distinctions and group movements.
Contributing to the current understanding and effective conservation of valuable wetland habitats, the terrestrial research team at Archipelagos monitors bird species populating the Psili Ammos wetland on the island of Samos. These wetlands are the habitat for a variety of unique organisms, including the greater flamingo. To monitor the flamingo population, weekly population counts are made. In addition, sediment samples are taken and analysed to gain more knowledge on flamingo diet ecology.
Samos harbours a vibrant diversity of bird species. There are many unique habitats present on the island. The wetlands and salt marsh in the southeast provide refuge to wetland birds that include the greater flamingo and the glossy ibis. Rocky cliffs serve as breeding sites for Eleonora’s falcon and the Eurasian eagle owl. Meanwhile, dense forests and shrubland at higher altitudes are home to many rare bird species. Moreover, the island’s location on an important migration route means that migratory species such as the European bee-eater and the black stork are present at specific times of the year.
Archipelagos’ terrestrial research team is monitoring the different bird species present in the region throughout the year to determine the habitat, abundance, and density of each species. These data will be used to identify vulnerable species and their threats, enabling the effective protection of these birds as well as their habitats.
The island of Samos hosts the last remaining population of the Mediterranean chameleon in Greece. This population is isolated and has a low density; therefore, it is essential to understand the distribution, characteristics, and trends of local groups. Archipelagos’ terrestrial team carries out research to fill existing knowledge gaps. By collecting data about population dynamics as well as vegetation and habitat preferences, effective conservation measures can be put into place to protect the remaining population.

In a remote corner of the eastern Aegean Sea, on the north side of the tiny island of Lipsi lies a small bay that few know about. Surrounded by pristine waters, this peaceful bit of Greece’s coastline has been waiting in vain to host dolphins freed from marine parks across the globe.
The world’s first permanent sanctuary for dolphins that have been rescued from captivity founded by the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation has been almost complete for some time. Yet, according to the institute, Greece’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy, responsible for issuing the relevant permits has been failing to do so for almost seven years.
The issue of the sanctuary’s operation came to the spotlight again, after Greece’s main zoo announced on Wednesday, January 22 that it would send its five captive dolphins to a Florida aquarium in the United States. Animal activists in Greece and the United States have been calling for the animals to be transferred to the Lipsi sanctuary, instead of spending the rest of their lives in another tank.

Ο Ναυτίλος άλλωστε αποτελεί την “εμπροσθοφυλακή” για τα άλλα σκάφη του Αρχιπελάγους - τον “Τρίτωνα”, τον “Aegean Explorer” ή την “Πηνελόπη”, ενώ άλλοτε λειτουργεί ως συνοδευτικό σκάφος. Έχει τα κατασκευαστικά χαρακτηριστικά ενός ανθεκτικού σκάφους, είναι φτιαγμένος για δύσκολα ή μεγάλης διάρκειας ταξίδια στο ανοιχτό πέλαγος.
Αυτές τις μέρες ταξιδεύουμε ενδιάμεσα σε συνεχόμενα μπουρίνια και εναλλαγές του καιρού. Οι μικροί κυκλώνες που συναντήσαμε στο πέλαγος δεν είναι ένα καινούργιο φαινόμενο στην περιοχή, όμως τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες τους παρατηρούμε σχετικά συχνά. Η απαξίωση της αλιείας στην Ελλάδα και ιδίως της μικρής παράκτιας αλιείας που επί χιλιάδες χρόνια είχε θεμελιώδη ρόλο για την επιβίωση και την ανάπτυξη των νησιωτικών και παράκτιων περιοχών, καθώς και η ανεπαρκής διαχείριση και οι ελλιπείς έλεγχοι, έχουν οδηγήσει στην υπεραλίευση και στο άδειασμα των θαλασσών μας από ιχθυαποθέματα.
Αυτό δεν επηρεάζει μόνο τους αλιείς που αναγκάζονται να εγκαταλείψουν τον κλάδο, αλλά και τα θαλάσσια είδη που έχουν όλο και λιγότερη τροφή, όπως αντίστοιχα και τους ανθρώπους που πρέπει να έχουν πρόσβαση σε ποιοτική τροφή από τις θάλασσες.

Θεωρητική εκπαίδευση στις πρώτες βοήθειες από την
Ελληνική Ομάδα Διάσωσης Παράρτημα Σάμου - Hellenic Rescue Team of Samos σε πάνω από 60 μέλη των ερευνητικών ομάδων του Ινστιτούτου Αρχιπέλαγος. Θα ακολουθήσουν μαθήματα διάσωσης στη θάλασσα σε πραγματικές συνθήκες πάνω στα ερευνητικά σκάφη. Η εκπαίδευση που μας προσφέρεται είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική, δεδομένου ότι βρισκόμαστε στη θάλασσα σχεδόν καθημερινά και κυρίως στο ανοιχτό πέλαγος.

Οι χειμερινοί κήποι και τα οπωροφόρα δέντρα στην κεντρική βάση του Ινστιτούτου Αρχιπέλαγος παραμένουν παραγωγικά, εφόσον και εμείς τα φροντίζουμε καθημερινά, με γνώση και μεράκι. Με τα κατάλληλα θρεπτικά συστατικά στο χώμα, έχουν φυσική άμυνα στα φυτοπαθογόνα, με αποτέλεσμα να μην χρειάζονται ούτε καν ήπια και βιολογική φυτοπροστασία.
Οι κήποι μας καλύπτουν μεγάλο μέρος των διατροφικών αναγκών της ερευνητικής ομάδας με καλής ποιότητας προϊόντα βιολογικής καλλιέργειας, στις ερευνητικές βάσεις αλλά και εν πλω στις αποστολές μας στο πέλαγος. Όλη δουλειά για την καλλιέργεια, φροντίδα των κήπων, μεταποίηση, κλπ. γίνεται κυρίως πέρα από τις ώρες εργασίας όλων μας σε στεριά και θάλασσα.
Ο στόχος μας να είμαστε αυτάρκεις και να καταναλώνουμε καλής ποιότητας και ασφαλή προϊόντα είναι κάτι εφικτό για τους περισσότερους, όταν υπάρχει πρόσβαση έστω και σε λίγα τετραγωνικά παραγωγικού χώματος, ή ακόμα και σε παρτέρια ή μεγάλες γλάστρες. Στις μέρες μας αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό, καθώς τα κηπευτικά δεν είναι μόνο ακριβά, αλλά και κακής ποιότητας ή ακόμα και επικίνδυνα, λόγω της αλόγιστης χρήσης επικίνδυνων φυτοφαρμάκων. Ας μην ξεχνάμε άλλωστε ότι ζούμε σε μία χώρα με εξαιρετικό κλίμα και πέρα από ένα μικρό κομμάτι γης το μόνο που χρειάζεται είναι λίγη γνώση, πολύ μεράκι και φροντίδα.

The winter vegetable gardens and fruit trees in Archipelagos’ research base keep producing as long as we tend to them daily. With the right nutrients in the soil, they have a natural defence against phytopathogens and do not even need organic plant protection.
Our gardens provide a significant portion of the nutritional needs for the research team, supplying high-quality organic produce both at our research bases and on board our boats. The cultivation, maintenance of the gardens, and processing of produce are primarily conducted outside of our regular working hours, both on land and at sea.
Our goals of consuming safe, high-quality produce and being self-sufficient are achievable for most others if they just have access to even a few square meters of fertile land, or even in garden beds or large flower pots. This is even more important nowadays, as vegetables are not only expensive but also of poor quality or even hazardous due to reckless usage of dangerous pesticides. Let's not forget that we live in a country with a very favourable climate for gardens, so all that is needed, aside from a small piece of land, is a little knowledge and plenty of care.
