The First No-Trawl Zone over Coralligenous Habitats - A Milestone for Marine Conservation in Greece

As a result of years of extensive, long-term scientific research led by Archipelagos, in June 2025 a no-trawl zone of 430 km2 was finally designated around the coralligenous habitats of the Fourni island complex in the eastern Aegean Sea. Within the dimly lit mesophotic zone of the Greek Seas (between ~30 to 150 meters), lie some of the oldest, most complex and productive marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean: coralligenous habitats. Formed over centuries or even millennia, these underwater structures host extraordinary biodiversity and support more than 1,800 marine species. Some of the organisms forming these ecosystems may exceed 7,000 years in age. Yet despite their ecological importance, these fragile habitats remain among the least studied and historically least protected marine ecosystems, largely because they exist “out of sight and out of mind”

Protecting the ecosystems of the mesophotic zone has been a key long-term priority for Archipelagos. Our research focuses on understanding, documenting, and safeguarding mesophotic ecosystems of the Greek Seas, including coralligenous assemblages, black coral forests, sea pen fields and rhodolith beds

Following many years of research, a major milestone was achieved in 2025 with the official recognition and protection of coralligenous ecosystems surrounding the Fourni island complex. A 430km2 no-trawl zone was formally designated through a Ministerial Decision by the Greek Ministry of Environment, marking the first time coralligenous habitats have received institutional protection in Greece. This designation represents a significant step toward safeguarding these fragile ecosystems from destructive fishing practices. 

Archipelagos continues to work year-round to map, monitor and protect mesophotic habitats of the Aegean. Through research expeditions conducted with our primary vessel, the Aegean Explorer, we combine state-of-the-art technologies (e.g., multibeam, biomass scanner, ROVs) with fishermen’s Local Ecological Knowledge to produce high-resolution habitat maps. These maps are essential for guiding conservation strategies, enforcing environmental legislation, and raising public awareness about the hidden biodiversity of the Mediterranean’s deeper seas. 

The initiative was developed in close collaboration with the Municipality of Fourni, the island’s fishing community, as well as international scientific experts. As the first such case of institutional protection for these habitats in Greece, it sets a precedent and encourages the development of similar conservation frameworks in other regions of Greece and throughout the Mediterranean.

Coralligenous Habitat Mapping

A vital step in safeguarding the deep-sea coralligenous habitats of the Mediterranean is the development of accurate, high-resolution maps—essential tools for both effective conservation management and the enforcement of environmental legislation. At Archipelagos Institute, this process begins with participatory GIS assessments, carried out in close collaboration with local fishers and coastal communities to identify areas likely to host vulnerable habitats.

To verify and map these areas with precision, Archipelagos researchers employ a specially developed rapid-assessment methodology. Utilizing the research vessel Aegean Explorer, which is equipped with advanced technologies including multibeam sonar, biomass scanners, and a range of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), our teams are able to explore and document even the most remote and fragile seafloor ecosystems.

The multibeam sonar captures detailed imagery of the seafloor’s morphology, while the biomass scanner detects the presence of benthic life and fish stocks associated with coralligenous structures. These cutting-edge tools allow us to accurately locate and map coralligenous habitats scattered across the Aegean Sea, generating the high-resolution data needed to support targeted conservation efforts and policy interventions.

Biodiversity Assessments

One of Archipelagos core objectives is to conduct comprehensive ecological assessments to uncover the rich biodiversity of the Mediterranean’s understudied mesobenthic habitats. Once potential benthic habitat locations are identified, the Aegean Explorer deploys its array of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to explore the seafloor, verify habitat presence, and conduct detailed taxonomic classification.

Understanding which species inhabit these areas, particularly those that are protected or vulnerable, is essential for determining the appropriate level and type of conservation measures. These assessments not only help prioritize areas for protection but also contribute valuable data to inform national and international environmental policy.

Given how little of the mesobenthic zone has been studied, there is also a significant potential for the discovery of new or previously unclassified species. These findings highlight the urgent need to protect these fragile ecosystems before irreversible damage occurs.

Law & Policy: Promoting Legislation Enforcement

As an urgent priority, the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is working towards the implementation and effective enforcement of “no-trawl zones” to protect the mesobenthic habitats from further destruction. The research results conducted by Archipelagos Institute and its partners are being communicated with policymakers at national, EU, and international levels to promote legislative and conservation efforts on a regional and Mediterranean scale.

Our immediate target is to create the scientific and political foundations for establishing the first no-trawl zones over mesobenthic habitats in the Aegean Sea. We aim to get our newly mapped areas protected from the immense damage caused by unregulated trawling fisheries. In the longer term, we work with our partners on the lobby to adapt EU regulations for more efficient and enforced levels of coralligenous protection Mediterranean-wide.

Local Ecological Knowledge & Public Engagement

The Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) held by fishing communities is an invaluable resource in understanding the ecological dynamics of the Aegean and broader Mediterranean. For over two decades, Archipelagos Institute has cultivated strong relationships of mutual trust and cooperation with local communities.

Protecting vulnerable coralligenous habitats begins with the support and insight of these communities. Fishermen, with their deep familiarity with the sea, play a crucial role in identifying the most intact and remote habitat areas. By integrating their environmental knowledge with scientific research, we can accurately and cost-effectively locate and map these fragile ecosystems, which often lie beyond the reach of conventional scientific surveys.

GIS assessments are at the heart of this collaboration. These tools not only enhance the precision of habitat mapping but also deepen community engagement and build a shared commitment to marine conservation. By involving local stakeholders directly in the research process, we foster a collective responsibility to safeguard these habitats for future generations.

Monitoring Destructive Fishing Activities

Destructive fishing practices, especially bottom trawling, and the accelerating impacts of climate change are among the most severe threats facing mesobenthic habitats in the Greek Seas and across the Mediterranean. Despite being protected under multiple EU and regional conservation frameworks, these habitats continue to be degraded due to a critical gap: the lack of detailed distribution data, which makes enforcement of protection measures extremely difficult.

Coralligenous habitats, which host rich biodiversity and serve as vital refuges for marine life, remain largely unmapped. As a result, designated no-trawling zones cannot be effectively implemented, and towed fishing gear continues to be used within sensitive areas. This leads to irreversible physical destruction of seafloor communities, many of which take centuries to recover, if at all.

To address this, Archipelagos collaborates with local communities throughout the Mediterranean to monitor and expose destructive fishing practices. Using ROVs, our research teams document the damage caused by trawlers in real time, building the scientific evidence necessary to push for stronger regulatory action and the enforcement of existing marine protection laws.

Fishermen provide invaluable insights into areas likely to host vulnerable habitats, helping researchers identify priority sites for further investigation. 

To verify and map these areas with precision, Archipelagos researchers employ a specially developed rapid-assessment methodology. Utilizing the research vessel Aegean Explorer, equipped with advanced technologies including multibeam sonar, biomass scanners, and a range of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), our teams are able to explore and document even the most remote and fragile seafloor ecosystems.

Multibeam sonar provides detailed imagery of the seafloor morphology, while the biomass scanner detects the presence of benthic life and fish stocks associated with coralligenous structures. The data gathered from the ROVs is combined with data and samples collected during deep-diving operations by our partners from Under the Pole. This allows researchers to collect detailed ecological and taxonomical observations. 

This approach enabled the mapping of extensive coralligenous ecosystems around the Fourni island complex, providing the scientific evidence necessary for their official recognition and legal protection. The resulting high-resolution habitat data now supports the implementation of conservation measures, including the recently established 430km2 no-trawl zone.

Biodiversity Assessments

Once potential benthic habitat locations are identified, the Aegean Explorer deploys its array of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to explore the seafloor, verify habitat presence, and conduct detailed taxonomic classification. These surveys allow our researchers to document species composition, identify vulnerable or protected species, and better understand the ecological functioning of these complex ecosystems. 

Research in the coralligenous ecosystems surrounding Fourni island complex has already revealed remarkable biodiversity. To date, more than 300 species across 113 taxonomic genera have been documented in this region alone, including extensive forests of red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) and black coral (Antipathes subpinnata). These marine animal forests provide essential habitat for numerous species and play a key role in maintaining the productivity of surrounding marine ecosystems. 

Given how little of the mesophotic zone has been explored, in the Aegean as well as globally, the potential for new discoveries remains significant. Ongoing biodiversity assessments continue to expand our understanding of these ecosystems while strengthening the scientific foundation for their protection.

Monitoring Destructive Fishing Activities

Bottom trawling causes severe physical damage to the seafloor, flattening complex habitats that may have taken centuries or millennia to form. The heavy metal doors of trawl nets can devastate fragile coralligenous communities and marine mammal forests, leaving long-lasting scars on the seabed. 

The newly established 430km2 no-trawl zone around the Fourni island complex represents a critical step toward preventing further destruction of these vulnerable ecosystems. However, effective protection requires continuous monitoring and enforcement. 

Archipelagos collaborates with local communities to monitor and expose destructive fishing practices. Using ROVs, our research teams document the damage caused by trawlers in real time. These observations provide essential data for evaluating ecosystem health, supporting enforcement efforts, and guiding future conservation strategies. 

As research continues, Archipelagos and its partners aim to expand habitat mapping and monitoring efforts across the Aegean Sea, ensuring that additional vulnerable ecosystems can be identified and protected before irreversible damage occurs.

🦈 Μία σπάνια καταγραφή Ρινόβατου (Glaucostegus cemiculus), ενός από τα πλέον απειλούμενα ελασμοβράγχια της Μεσογείου, στα νερά του ανατολικού Αιγαίου.

Η ερευνητική ομάδα του Ινστιτούτου Αρχιπέλαγος πραγματοποιεί καθημερινά, καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του χρόνου, έρευνες και καταγραφές στα θαλάσσια οικοσυστήματα. Μέσα σε τρεις δεκαετίες συνεχούς παρουσίας και έρευνας στη θάλασσα, είναι η πρώτη φορά που καταγράφουμε ρινόβατο. 

Οι ρινόβατοι είναι εντελώς ακίνδυνοι για τον άνθρωπο, όμως οι ίδιοι αντιμετωπίζουν σοβαρές απειλές εξαιτίας του ανθρώπου. 

Μία από τις σημαντικότερες είναι η παρεμπίπτουσα αλιεία, όταν δηλαδή παγιδεύονται κατά λάθος σε αλιευτικά εργαλεία. 
Οι πληθυσμοί και των δύο ειδών ρινόβατου στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο έχουν παρουσιάσει σημαντική μείωση, ενώ σύμφωνα με την IUCN, εκτιμάται πιθανή περαιτέρω μείωσή τους κατά 50% μέσα στα επόμενα 15–20 χρόνια. 

🌊 Συναντήσεις σαν αυτή μας θυμίζουν πόσο σημαντική, αλλά και πόσο ευάλωτη, είναι η σπάνια βιοποικιλότητα που εξακολουθούν να φιλοξενούν τα νερά του Αιγαίου.
Η καταγραφή και προστασία αυτής της μοναδικής θαλάσσιας ζωής αποτελεί βασική προτεραιότητα της συνεχούς έρευνας και δράσης του Ινστιτούτου Θαλάσσιας Προστασίας Αρχιπέλαγος.

The research team of the Archipelagos Institute carries out daily surveys and monitoring of the shallow and deeper marine ecosystems throughout the year. In 3 decades of continuous presence and research at sea, this is the first time we have recorded a guitarfish.

Guitarfish are completely harmless to humans, yet they themselves face serious threats as a result of human activity. One of the most significant is bycatch, when they are accidentally caught in fishing gear.

Populations of both guitarfish species in the Eastern Mediterranean have declined significantly, while according to the IUCN, a further decline of 50% is considered possible over the next 15–20 years.

🌊 Encounters like this remind us just how important, but also how vulnerable, the rare biodiversity that still survives in the waters of the Aegean is.

Οι κήποι του Ινστιτούτου Αρχιπέλαγος – Καλλιεργώντας τη διατροφική μας αυτάρκεια

Παρά τον ιδιαίτερα απαιτητικό ρυθμό της έρευνας και της καθημερινής μας δράσης για την προστασία των θαλασσών και των νησιών, στο Ινστιτούτο Αρχιπέλαγος θεωρούμε αυτονόητο ότι οφείλουμε να διασφαλίζουμε, όσο αυτό είναι εφικτό, τη διατροφική μας αυτάρκεια. Για χιλιάδες χρόνια, αυτή η πρακτική αποτελούσε βασικό τρόπο ζωής και επιβίωσης για τους κατοίκους των νησιών, αλλά και ολόκληρης της Ελλάδας, μιας χώρας που διαθέτει εξαιρετικές κλιματικές συνθήκες για την καλλιέργεια της γης.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, όμως, ακόμη και στα χωριά βλέπουμε όλο και λιγότερους ανθρώπους να καλλιεργούν τη γη τους. Μαζί με την εγκατάλειψη της καλλιέργειας χάνεται σταδιακά μια πολύτιμη γνώση που μεταδιδόταν από γενιά σε γενιά, καθώς και η ίδια η νοοτροπία της διατροφικής αυτάρκειας. Στις μέρες μας αυτό είναι πιο σημαντικό από ποτέ, καθώς τα κηπευτικά δεν είναι μόνο ολοένα και ακριβότερα, αλλά πολλά ενδέχεται να είναι επικίνδυνα λόγω της αλόγιστης χρήσης τοξικών φυτοφαρμάκων.

Είναι απολύτως κατανοητό ότι πολλοί άνθρωποι στις πόλεις δεν έχουν πρόσβαση σε γη ούτε τη δυνατότητα να καλλιεργήσουν τη δική τους τροφή. Αυτό όμως που προβληματίζει είναι ότι σε μεγάλο μέρος της ελληνικής υπαίθρου η εύφορη γη παραμένει ολοένα και περισσότερο ακαλλιέργητη

Η γη, όταν τη φροντίζουμε, μας ανταμείβει πλουσιοπάροχα, όπως κάνει εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ίσως η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση σήμερα να μην είναι η έλλειψη γης, αλλά η νοοτροπία της μοιρολατρίας και η απομάκρυνσή μας από μια γνώση που επί αιώνες αποτελούσε αναπόσπαστο μέρος της ζωής, ιδίως στα νησιά.

The Gardens of Archipelagos: Cultivating Food Self-Sufficiency 

Despite the highly demanding workload of our research and daily efforts to protect the marine environment, at the Archipelagos Institute we believe it is essential to maintain, as much as possible, our own food self-sufficiency. For thousands of years, cultivating the land was central to the survival and way of life of the inhabitants of the Greek islands, and of communities throughout Greece - a country blessed with exceptionally favourable conditions for agriculture. 

In recent years, however, we have seen fewer and fewer people cultivating the land, even in rural villages. Along with the decline of traditional cultivation, we are gradually losing valuable knowledge that has been passed down through generations, as well as the very mindset of food self-sufficiency. Today, preserving this knowledge is more important than ever. Fresh vegetables are not only becoming increasingly expensive, but many may also be unsafe due to the excessive use of toxic pesticides. 

It is, of course, understandable that many people living in cities have no access to land or the opportunity to grow their own food. What is concerning, however, is that across much of rural Greece, fertile land is increasingly being left uncultivated.

When we care for it, the land continues to reward us generously, just as it has for thousands of years. Perhaps the greatest challenge today is not the lack of land, but a growing sense of fatalism and the gradual loss of the knowledge and mindset of self-sufficiency that sustained island communities for centuries.Image attachmentImage attachment+1Image attachment

Είναι απολύτως κατανοητό ότι πολλοί άνθρωποι στις πόλεις δεν έχουν πρόσβαση σε γη ούτε τη δυνατότητα να καλλιεργήσουν τη δική τους τροφή. Αυτό όμως που προβληματίζει είναι ότι σε μεγάλο μέρος της ελληνικής υπαίθρου η εύφορη γη παραμένει ολοένα και περισσότερο ακαλλιέργητη

Η γη, όταν τη φροντίζουμε, μας ανταμείβει πλουσιοπάροχα, όπως κάνει εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ίσως η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση σήμερα να μην είναι η έλλειψη γης, αλλά η νοοτροπία της μοιρολατρίας και η απομάκρυνσή μας από μια γνώση που επί αιώνες αποτελούσε αναπόσπαστο μέρος της ζωής, ιδίως στα νησιά.

The Gardens of Archipelagos: Cultivating Food Self-Sufficiency

Despite the highly demanding workload of our research and daily efforts to protect the marine environment, at the Archipelagos Institute we believe it is essential to maintain, as much as possible, our own food self-sufficiency. For thousands of years, cultivating the land was central to the survival and way of life of the inhabitants of the Greek islands, and of communities throughout Greece - a country blessed with exceptionally favourable conditions for agriculture.

In recent years, however, we have seen fewer and fewer people cultivating the land, even in rural villages. Along with the decline of traditional cultivation, we are gradually losing valuable knowledge that has been passed down through generations, as well as the very mindset of food self-sufficiency. Today, preserving this knowledge is more important than ever. Fresh vegetables are not only becoming increasingly expensive, but many may also be unsafe due to the excessive use of toxic pesticides.

It is, of course, understandable that many people living in cities have no access to land or the opportunity to grow their own food. What is concerning, however, is that across much of rural Greece, fertile land is increasingly being left uncultivated.

When we care for it, the land continues to reward us generously, just as it has for thousands of years. Perhaps the greatest challenge today is not the lack of land, but a growing sense of fatalism and the gradual loss of the knowledge and mindset of self-sufficiency that sustained island communities for centuries.

Οκτώ χρόνια εγκλωβισμού. Οκτώ χρόνια κακοποίησης. Πόσο ακόμη θα το ανεχόμαστε;

Από το κρύο του χειμώνα στην αφόρητη ζέστη του καλοκαιριού και ξανά από την αφόρητη ζέστη στο κρύο. Εδώ και οκτώ ολόκληρα χρόνια, δύο θαλάσσιοι λέοντες παραμένουν εγκλωβισμένοι σε μία μικρή τσιμεντένια δεξαμενή στο Αττικό Ζωολογικό Πάρκο, καταδικασμένοι να κολυμπούν μονότονα κάνοντας περίπου 240 κύκλους την ώρα, κοιτάζοντας εναγωνίως προς το σημείο που τους δίνεται η τροφή, χωρίς καμία δυνατότητα να εκδηλώσουν τις φυσικές τους συμπεριφορές.

Αν αυτό δεν αποτελεί κακοποίηση ζώων, τότε τι ακριβώς θεωρούμε σήμερα κακοποίηση;

Όλες οι συζητήσεις περί ευζωίας των ζώων, οι νομοθεσίες, οι εξαγγελίες και οι δημόσιες τοποθετήσεις χάνουν κάθε αξιοπιστία όταν επιτρέπεται να συνεχίζεται μία τόσο προφανής μορφή βασανισμού, μπροστά στα μάτια χιλιάδων επισκεπτών, μαθητών και παιδιών.

Η ευθύνη δεν βαραίνει μόνο την Πολιτεία και τις αρμόδιες αρχές, που εδώ και χρόνια ανέχονται και ουσιαστικά νομιμοποιούν αυτή την κατάσταση. Βαραίνει και όλους εμάς. Ένας ζωολογικός κήπος δεν μπορεί να λειτουργεί και να ευημερεί χωρίς την οικονομική στήριξη των επισκεπτών του. Κάθε εισιτήριο που κόβεται αποτελεί μία ακόμη επιβράβευση αυτής της πρακτικής.

Το ζήτημα δεν αφορά μόνο τους θαλάσσιους λέοντες ή τα δελφίνια. Αφορά τα μεταναστευτικά πουλιά, τα τροπικά θηλαστικά, τους πιγκουίνους και κάθε άλλο ζώο που παραμένει εγκλωβισμένο σε έναν χώρο αποκλεισμού και εμπορικής εκμετάλλευσης, με μοναδικό σκοπό το οικονομικό κέρδος.

Ήρθε η ώρα να αναρωτηθούμε σοβαρά: θέλουμε πραγματικά να συνεχίσουμε να ανεχόμαστε αυτή την κατάσταση; Ή θα απαιτήσουμε, επιτέλους, η προστασία και η ευζωία των ζώων να πάψουν να αποτελούν ένα επικοινωνιακό προσωπείο και να γίνουν πράξη;

Η ανοχή μας δεν είναι ουδέτερη. Είναι αυτή που επιτρέπει αυτή την πραγματικότητα να συνεχίζεται εδώ και οκτώ χρόνια. Και κάθε μέρα που περνά είναι άλλη μία ημέρα εγκλωβισμού, εκμετάλλευσης και κακοποίησης ζώων, στον βωμό του κέρδους.

Eight years of confinement. Eight years of abuse. How much longer are we going to put up with this?

🦭From the cold of winter to the unbearable heat of summer, and then back again from the unbearable heat to the cold. For eight full years now, two sea lions have remained confined to a small concrete tank at the Attica Zoological Park, condemned to swim monotonously, making about 240 laps per hour, staring intently at the spot where they are fed, with no opportunity to express their natural behaviors.

❓If this isn't animal abuse, then what exactly do we consider abuse today?
All the discussions about animal welfare, the laws, the announcements, and the public statements lose all credibility when such an obvious form of cruelty is allowed to continue, right before the eyes of thousands of visitors, students, and children.

🎟️The responsibility does not lie solely with the government and the relevant authorities, which for years have tolerated and effectively legitimized this situation. It also lies with all of us. A zoo cannot operate and thrive without the financial support of its visitors. Every ticket sold is yet another endorsement of this practice.

🚨The issue isn't just about sea lions or dolphins. It concerns migratory birds, tropical mammals, penguins, and every other animal that remains trapped in a space of confinement and commercial exploitation, with the sole purpose of financial gain.

🤔It’s time to ask ourselves seriously: Do we really want to continue tolerating this situation? Or will we finally demand that animal protection and welfare stop being just a public relations facade and become a reality?

‼️Our tolerance is not neutral. It is what has allowed this reality to continue for the past eight years. And every day that passes is another day of confinement, exploitation, and abuse of animals, all in the name of profit.

Coralligenous Assemblages

Coralligenous habitats are considered one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean Sea. The formation of this calcareous environment can take centuries to millennia, with some reefs estimated to exceed 7,000 years in age. These remarkable underwater structures are primarily formed by slow-growing calcareous algae such as Lithophyllum sp. and Mesophyllum sp., which gradually build complex reel-like formations over time. Their structural heterogeneity creates ideal conditions for diverse assemblages or organisms, including porifera, anthozoans, bryozoans, hydroids, and many other marine species.

 

Located in the dimly lit mesophotic zone, coralligenous ecosystems are typically found between 60 and 250 meters depth in the Aegean Sea. These habitats are widely distributed around many Aegean islands, often forming extensive underwater landscapes that support exceptionally rich biodiversity. Each square meter of coralligenous habitat can host a remarkable diversity of life. Across the Mediterranean, these ecosystems support more than 1,800 species, while recent research in the Fourni island complex alone has already documented over 300 species across 113 taxonomic genera, including extensive forests of red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) and black coral (Antipathes subpinnata).

 

Classified by the European Union as “reef” habitats under the Habitats Directive, coralligenous assemblages are endemic to the Mediterranean and are widely recognised as vulnerable marine ecosystems. With extremely slow growth rates, often less than 1 mm per year, they are particularly sensitive to disturbance and can take centuries to recover from damage.

 

Following many years of scientific research and habitat mapping, the coralligenous ecosystems surrounding the Fourni island complex in the eastern Aegean Sea were officially recognised and protected in 2025. This led to the designation of the first 430 km2 no-trawl zone over coralligenous habitats in Greece, making a major milestone for marine conservation and setting a precedent for the protection of similar ecosystems across the Mediterranean.

Black Coral Forests

Black corals are colonial hexacorals belonging to the order Antipatharia, with a global distribution. Under suitable environmental conditions, they can form dense aggregations known as black coral forests. In the Mediterranean Sea, these forests create structurally complex habitats that support a wide variety of marine life, serving as important feeding, spawning, and nursery grounds for numerous species. They are considered critical habitats for many marine organisms, including sharks, rays, and cephalopods.

 

One of the most ecologically significant species in the Mediterranean is Antipathella subpinnata. Populations of this species have persisted in the Aegean Sea for centuries, forming marine animal forests composed of organisms that can live for hundreds to potentially thousands of years. Despite their ecological importance, A. subpinnata is highly vulnerable to disturbance and is currently listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List, largely due to damage caused by destructive fishing practices such as bottom trawling.

 

These slow-growing habitats are particularly susceptible to irreversible damage. Although black coral forests are recognised as protected habitats under European conservation frameworks, they remain largely unmonitored due to the limited availability of accurate distribution maps. In recent years, Archipelagos Institute has been working to locate and document black coral forests around several Aegean islands. The forests monitored by Archipelagos Institutes are typically found at depths of around 100 meters within the mesophotic zone.

 

Raising awareness of these hidden ecosystems is essential, as their protection is critical for maintaining the health and biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea.

Sea Pen Fields

Sea pens, Pennatula phosphorea, are unique marine invertebrates that form colonies made up of many tiny animals called polyps, each only a few millimetres in size. Although they belong to the same group as corals, sea pens differ in one remarkable way: they can slowly move across the seafloor to find more favourable conditions before anchoring themselves in soft sediments.

 

In suitable environments, sea pens can form dense aggregations known as “sea pen fields”, often described as underwater gardens. These habitats develop on sandy or muddy seabeds, where the colonies anchor themselves using a bulb-like structure and extend upright into the water column.

 

Despite their delicate appearance, sea pen fields are important biodiversity hotspots. Recent research in the Aegean Sea has shown that these habitats can support an impressive diversity of marine life, with over 250 species recorded within just a small survey area in the mesophotic zone. They provide shelter and feeding grounds for a wide range of organisms, contributing to the overall health and productivity of marine ecosystems.

 

Pennatula phosphorea is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations in decline. In the Aegean Sea, their distribution remains largely unknown, making them particularly susceptible to destructive fishing practices such as bottom trawling, which can destroy entire habitats in a single pass.

Rhodolith and Mäerl Beds

Mäerl and Rhodolith Beds are characterized by red algal concretions that form extensive benthic habitats. They largely occur in the mesophotic zone at 40-60m depth, but are also present in coastal waters. Their growth patterns result in a heterogenous community of branched coralline structures and multiple species of Rhodolith.’Mäerl’ refers to an area of calcified algae deposits or calcareous beds, while ‘Rhodoliths’ are various forms of unattached calcareous algae nodules. The term ‘Rhodolith Bed’ includes Mäerl Beds, by definition. However, the latter cannot be said. These habitats have a very important role in climate regulation, they host high species richness, particularly fish assemblages, and are considered ecosystem engineers, owing to their complex structures and accumulation of dead material.
