Consumption of this species is considered unsustainable, as this species is considered Endangered in the Mediterranean area due to the high fishing pressure. This species is extremely ecologically important since it is a natural predator of the invasive Lionfish!
Head and body of dark reddish/grayish color on top. The belly is lighter, sometimes yellowish. It has white or beige spots visible on the body and head. The odd fins are dark brown, often with a white margin at the end. The pelvis and pectoral fins are dark, often yellowish at their base. Like other groupers, this species has spines on the fins, 11 on the dorsal fin and 3 on the anal fin. Simulations estimate a common length of 120 cm. Large mouth with thick lips.
Looks like: Epinephelus aeneus (White Grouper): it generally has a lighter color and lacks the distinctive dark margins on the fins that E. marginatus often displays.
