Consumption of this species is considered unsustainable, as stocks are under pressure. Due to ineffective legislation that does not take into account the species biology, the legal size of this fish is substantially lower than the sustainable size. This makes it particularly important to respect the sustainable size shown.

Non toxic

Depth of body less than head length, depth 3.0-3.6 times in SL; head length 2.5-2.9 times in SL; interorbital area convex; preopercle angular, 3.6- large spines at the angle, lowermost directed ventrally; posterior nostril slightly bigger than anterior nostril; maxilla reaches nearly to vertical at rear edge of eye; pelvic fin origin below base of pectoral fins; rounded caudal fin; body scales ctenoid. 2-3 whitish oblique lines on the side of the head, sometimes transversal bands on the body. Looks like: Epinephelus marginatus (Dusky Grouper): also found in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, it shares a similar body shape and habitat with the White Grouper.

Female white groupers become males when they reach 10‑13 years of age!
