Archipelagos researchers carried out a targeted research expedition in the region of Latzima Rethymno, in Crete to investigate the causes of contamination & pollution in the area. The research was done in collaboration with the Laboratory of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, NTU and the local citizens associations of the region of Rethymno.

Analyses of ground water and sea water samples were performed by the Laboratory of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, NTU. The results demonstrated extensive pollution of the aquifer as a result of diversion of waste water from the industrial pig farms and meat processing unit.
