Advice For Consumption
Think before consuming this fish and always respect sustainable sizes and seasons. Eat responsibly. Due to ineffective legislation that does not take into account the species biology, the legal size of this fish is substantially lower than the sustainable size. This makes it particularly important to respect the sustainable size shown.
Toxicity
Some evidence for heavy metal accumulation but concentrations have not been found to exceed levels safe for consumption.
Description
Snout pointed; maxilla short, tip blunt, reaching almost to front border of pre-operculum, not projecting beyond tip of second supra-maxilla; tip of lower jaw reaching almost to below nostril. Gill rakers present on hind face of third epibranchial. Pseudobranch longer than eye, reaching onto inner face of operculum. A silver stripe along flank, disappearing with age. Looks like: Peruvian anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), and the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita).
