The work for the preparation of the bay at the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary on the island of Lipsi continues at an intensive rate and Archipelagos’ team remains on site despite the frequently adverse weather conditions. It gives us great joy to see that the areas where we replant and nurture underwater gardens of Posidonia seagrass are visited more and more frequently by Green turtles. The Green turtle is one of the largest in size species of marine turtle and the one that feeds solely on plants.
They can be seen in the Greek seas year-round, while during the months of limited anthropogenic disturbance they can also be spotted in coastal waters feeding on Posidonia seagrass meadows. They can live for up to 70-80 years, but they are increasingly impacted by human activities such as speedboats, plastic pollution and bycatch.
