In the deep waters of Ikaria “Aegean Explorer” and “Penelope”

The boats of the institute of Marine Protection Archipelago, ” Aegean Explorer ” and ” Penelope “, manned with scientists, students and the necessary technological equipment have been located since the beginning of the month in the marine area north of ikaria. Known waters for ” Penelope ” that started the research in this area 19 years ago – new waters for ” Aegean Explorer “. starting the port of participantsreside of ikaria but also ” bonding ” for a few hours in the port of Saint Drakano where discussions with the nautical group of ikaria will be transformed into cooperation with the creation of an immediate action group on environmental marine issues.

Anastasia Milliou told ERT Aegean: “A very interesting sea, with a deep canyon exceeding 1100 meters in depth. This area is one of the most important migration routes for large marine mammals in the NE Mediterranean. On our first day in the area we recorded sperm whale migration.

At the same time we are continuing our research to assess the degree of plastic pollution in the seawater column and in conjunction with multi-level data collection in coastal waters (recording the spread of invasive species, mortality rate of Pina nobilis, mapping of surface area meadows of Posidonia).

On Monday 2/9 they visited the beach of Faros where there are 4 nesting eggs of sea turtles with 2 of them looking more “active” and hoping in a few days to have new turtles!
