An important research is about to start in cooperation between Archipelagos Institute and UNEP/MAP – RAC SPA (The Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas of the UN Environment Programme).
For the first time in the Mediterranean a parallel monitoring will be carried out in several parts of the Aegean, focusing on the key “common biodiversity indicators”, i.e. marine mammals, turtles and seabirds, protected marine habitats (seagrass meadows and coralligene reefs), as a well as of the spread of invasive marine species.
These actions aim at the better implementation of the ecosystemic approach adopted by the United Nations, namely the protection of ecosystems and coastal communities, and not only the protection of individual species.
