For decades, Greece has persistently undermined its fisheries sector through ineffective and often destructive management practices—an approach that has reached a critical tipping point today. As a result, the country’s marine environments are increasingly depleted, vulnerable and productive ecosystems are being severely damaged, and traditional fishing livelihoods are becoming unviable. At the same time, numerous marine species are now struggling to find adequate food, threatening the broader ecological balance of the region.
At the heart of this environmental collapse is the illegal and destructive use of bottom trawling gear—mechanised trawlers that tear through the seafloor. This practice not only devastates marine biodiversity and the delicate balance of marine ecosystems but also threatens the survival of coastal fishing communities.
Featuring interviews with fishermen and scientists from the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, this short documentary brings to light a critical environmental issue. It is not only impacting marine species and the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea, but has already begun to affect us all, as it escalates into a broader food security crisis.
