This product report is part of a project internship and was commissioned by Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation. This product report goes in-depth on the target group, requirements, and design choices of the products made.
The first products made are maps for the report on the results of the surveys done last year on the presence of coralligenous in the Aegean Sea, written by the Deep-Sea Conservation project owner of Archipelagos.Based on this knowledge, design choices have been made for the visualization of these maps. The main design choice was to work with a 1 by 1-kilometer grid to show a general location of the habitats and research areas in order to better protect these areas from trawling activities.
After finalizing the maps for the coralligenous report the next product was making a story map about the Deep-Sea Conservation project of Archipelagos Institute. The story map will be used as a webpage in addition to the future website of the organization. Archipelagos Institute is working on different key projects of which the Deep-Sea Conservation project is one. This story map on the Deep-Sea Conservation project is about general knowledge of the subject and Archipelagos work within the project. The story map is meant to inform the citizens of Greece and the Mediterranean and must attract diplomats and politicians to the Archipelagos report about their research. The story map is made by combining the share topics of the current ‘Coralligene Conservation’ webpage from the Archipelagos’ website and the shared topics from the report about the coralligenous research in 2021 written by the project owner of Deep-Sea Conservation. Different kinds of content, such as a sidecar, a slideshow, some pictures, and a map, are being used to articulate the information about this subject.
In the end, it was even managed to produce a story map about the Seagrass Conservation program of Archipelagos Institute within this internship period. This story map will also be used as a webpage in addition to the future website of the organization. This story map on the Seagrass Conservation program is about general knowledge of the program and different projects of Archipelagos to protect, conserve and restore Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean. The story map is made by combining the current content of the ‘Seagrass Meadows’ webpage from the Archipelagos’ website and a brainstorming session with the GIS Research supervisor and the Marine Ecology Research Assistant.
