The future of our seas depends on education, collaboration, and the courage to turn knowledge into action.
ACS Athens (American Community Schools) hosted the signing ceremony of the innovative educational program Blue Frontiers, an important international collaboration between ACS Athens, Roger Williams University, the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, and its educational branch, the International School of the Sea (https://www.instagram.com/intlschoolofthesea…), with the support of the Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus.
The event was also attended by Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister for the Oceans and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Protection. Representing the Archipelagos Institute was Beatriz Tintoré, Head of Marine Mammal Research, who has been continuously engaged in research across the Aegean Sea for the past six years.
Educational needs are changing, just as our seas are changing. Young people need hands-on experiences in order to develop not only as scientists with modern knowledge and expertise, but also as responsible citizens capable of understanding and addressing the complex challenges threatening the oceans and the environment.
The complex issues we face today require new approaches and meaningful collaborations. The “Blue Frontiers” program creates a vital bridge between scientific research, education, and marine conservation, offering students experiential learning centered on the Aegean Sea through onboard training on the research vessels and at the advanced field laboratories of the Archipelagos Institute, based on initiatives developed in close cooperation with local communities.
At the same time, the program provides access to knowledge and practical skills through modern research tools, new technologies, and specialised software that are shaping the future of scientific research and marine environmental protection.
Through more than 25 years of continuous activity, the Archipelagos Institute and its educational branch, the International School of the Sea, have hosted and trained more than 27,000 graduates, undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD candidates, and researchers from 43 countries, in close collaboration with specialized universities across Europe, the United States, Canada, and Asia
