Archipelagos’ research mission in the North Aegean and the Thracian Sea now continues on in the Limnos sea. Limnos is a special island with a wealth of marine life that holds global environmental importance due to its geographical location and the geomorphology of the surrounding seas.

The boats Triton and Naftilos are in the port of Myrina. For 2 days, gale-force winds have prevailed and the boat crews remain on alert, given that further deterioration of the weather is expected and the ports are not safe either…

Until the weather conditions improve we are focusing on a very important aspect of this mission which is to inform, raise awareness and inspire the students of the island. So far we have visited 14 schools of all levels: kindergartens, primary, secondary and high schools.

Our goal is to help fill the huge knowledge gap left by the state and the official educational curriculum, regarding the rare biodiversity of our immediate environments and how we can co-exist harmoniously with it. Without this knowledge, we become increasingly vulnerable to ignorance and alienation from the nature that surrounds us. Before we can contribute to any form of environmental protection, we must first gain knowledge and understanding.

At the same time, we have already started to hold and are continuing to plan meetings with the local government, with citizens’ organisations, with groups of teachers, and with fishermen of Lemnos.

This important action that has just started will continue in the coming months and years with the valuable cooperation of the dynamic citizen’s organisation Lemnos Marine Conservation.
