As the northerly winds became weaker overnight, we are taking advantage of the good weather conditions today. The National Holiday on the 28th of October will not hold us back from the conservation of the Greek seas! This morning Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation took off for another research expedition!
Our boats, “Aegean Explorer” and “Pinelopi” departed from the port of Lipsi and are headed towards the Northeastern Aegean. During the next few days “Pinelopi’s” crew will continue the monitoring of cetacean populations, whereas the crew of the “Aegean Explorer” will continue with efforts to map the coraligenous reefs. The latter is part of a research effort which started a few years ago. It aims to promote the implementations of the existing EU and national legislations, which define that no trawl zones should be established over these protected and highly fragile marine habitats. These habitats are still unmapped in the Greek Seas and most of the Mediterranean.
Archipelagos’ research teams will spend the next few days at sea taking advantage of good weather conditions this autumn, because every bit of marine conservation action can make a difference.
