Another day of working on the preparation of the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary, in one of the most beautiful corners of the country, on the island of Lipsi. Τhe core of the sanctuary is what Archipelagos’ researchers call the “hospital of the sea.”
This project has been built and prepared over the past years by specialists, in order to be able to offer rehabilitation and care for marine species, under the strictest standards of animal welfare.
Through long-term gathering of experts’ knowledge on marine life rehabilitation, our goal is to prove ourselves worthy of the responsibility we carry: the protection of one of the most biodiverse seas on the planet.
It must be emphasized that for this difficult undertaking we have neither received, nor sought, a single euro from the endless stream of funds that are being “evaporated” in Greece in the name of “environmental protection”.
Everyday experience in Greece shows that, unfortunately, every good and honest effort always faces the corrupted networks that have been exploiting the environmental sector for decades. Their purpose is not only to secure exclusivity in the management of public resources, but also to block the implementation of actions and projects that would expose their own destructive contribution. It is obvious that the last thing they are interested in is environmental protection or animal welfare.
An indicative example is the rehabilitation center built with millions of public funds in Alonissos island. It never operated, and today remains deserted, with doors, and windows stolen, housing only goats! Nobody refers to this incident, of course… its intended activity ended up in two container cabins inside Athens Zoo…
Therefore, beyond the completion of the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary, our aim is also to dismantle the groups that have been exploiting environmental issues for years.
Only in this way will the path open for new, worthwhile initiatives that will truly contribute to the protection of the rare species that have managed to survive in our seas until today.
